Soft serve ice cream
differs from regular ice cream by having air introduced during its freezing
process, giving it a smoother and lighter texture. This icy cold dessert grew
its popularity in recent years as many soft serve joints were set up in the
Klang Valley and Selangor. In fact, soft serve ice cream has actually been
around commercially for decades, from way back in the 1930s.
The soft serve ice
cream trend in Ipoh is growing slowly, ever since Milkcow from South Korea
established a branch in this small town. Hello
Elvis joined the local soft serve scene since February this year. Set in
the middle of the old shop houses, its huge signboard screams for your
attention. Surrounded by kopitiams and restaurants, including the famous Lou
Wong bean sprout chicken, Hello Elvis is an ideal stop for ice cream
after a meal on a sunny day.
Cheesy Wedges, RM 7.50
Besides being inspired by the late Elvis Presley, there is
also a more significant story behind the name. Two sisters who
founded this parlour, named it Hello
Elvis in memory of their father, who was a huge fan of Elvis Presley. Its
interior is beautifully decorated with pop art paintings
of the King of Rock and Roll, and a drum set designed table! It gives off strong
retro vibes from the moment you step into the building.
It was a hot sunny Thursday afternoon when my friend and I decided to chill ourselves with ice cream. The parlour was completely empty when we came because it was on a weekday, and we literally had the whole place to ourselves! Apparently this place is packed with crowds during weekends.
The menu displayed a collection of 14 variations of soft serve ice creams served in a cup, while there were 5 others that come in different forms such as waffles, cones, affogatoes, and brownies. Besides desserts, you may also order some snacks for your tea time which ranges from cheesy wedges to coney dogs.
I ordered the Curious
Churros soft serve ice cream in chocolate flavour. Not only because I was curious of their ice cream, but I really like
the combination of churros and ice cream. The soft serve ice cream was served
cold, almost at subzero temperature by coating the
cup with a layer of liquid nitrogen. This gives off a smoky effect for the ice cream, besides keeping it chilled. The cool smoke wears
off after a few minutes, giving just enough time for photo taking.
Curious Churros soft serve ice cream, RM9.50
The presentation of
the Curious Churros
looks plainly simple. The chocolate twisted soft serve was sprinkled with
peanuts and three pieces of warm crunchy churros stood next to it. I took a
small scoop of ice cream and sadly, it was below my expectation. The chocolate
flavour of the ice cream tasted rather artificial and sweet to be honest. The
consistency of the ice cream was quite watery. I was feeling a tad bit disappointed with the ice cream, but
the churros cheered me up! I like how freshly served the churros were, like
they just came right from the oven. That was probably why Curious Churros require 5-10 minutes of
waiting. The churros were warm and crispy and they went pretty well with
the cold ice cream.
Better Than Ex Boifren/Gurlfren, RM 12
Such a funny name
given by Hello Elvis. It’s probably a great dessert for someone to get over their
exes. This version of soft serve was sprinkled with choc balls and cereals and
accompanied with a piece of Kinder Bueno and a few marshmallows dipped in
chocolate sauce. My friend picked the vanilla flavour for this and it tasted
very sweet to me. The chocolate coated marshmallows
intensified the sweetness, and I felt a surge in my blood sugar level, resulting in instant hyperglycemia.
I got a sugar rush after tasting it! Guess that’s an effective method for
getting over your ex, which is by settling down for something sweeter!
The cheesy wedges
tasted pretty normal actually. The sauce was not as good as KFC’s, as I could hardly taste the cheese.
Overall, Hello
Elvis is getting it right, and sets the
bar for the other independent soft
serve dessert joints in Ipoh. I love how creative they were in coming up with so many
variations of ice cream on the menu as well as their quirky names.
Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement in terms of the quality and
taste of their soft serve ice cream. I will definitely be back
for their brownies, as I have heard some good reviews
about it!
